I just read a short article at Entrepreneur.com about network marketing. Overall it was positive, but I can’t help but focus on this last paragraph, laden with some of the common misconceptions about mlm:

Quote:

With network marketing, there are no big capital requirements, no geographical limitations, no minimum quotas required and no special education or skills needed. Network marketing is a low-overhead, homebased business that can actually offer many of the tax advantages associated with owning your own business. Network marketing is a people-to-people business that can significantly expand your circle of friends. It’s a business that enables you to travel and have fun as well as enjoy the lifestyle that extra income can provide.

No big capital requirements? What does that mean? Big is relative. What is big to me might not be to you. There are always expenses with every business, which network marketing is.

No minimum quotas required? This is part of the description of the author of this article:

…is a full-service multilevel marketing consulting firm in Tempe, Arizona. He is also the co-founder and chair of the Multi Level Marketing International Association (MLMIA),

So this man ought to know that the vast majority of mlm companies do indeed require distributors to be on auto-ship, and some even require that you sponsor a minimum number of active people, in order to qualify for the money you earned. Does yours?

No special education or skills needed? So not true. Network marketing is a sales business, and you need to learn some techniques in talking with people, some, dare I say, sales skills? Yes I dare, because it is the truth. You need sales skills to succeed in mlm. This is just another way of saying Network marketing is so easy, anyone can do this business! Which is bunk. Do you feel you need some specific skills to build your mlm business?

As for expanding ones circle of friends, that can just as easily go the other way, as anyone who has been involved in traditional MLM before knows. Every heard of the NFL club? (No Friends Left club)
